When it comes to writing, sometimes you run into a blank.
It’s a perfectly normal experience, but one that can become — frustrating if you let it. Recognizing that moment of “Uh-oh” is a key ingredient to moving through those situations.
Many people have “Advice” for those times.
This is not an advice piece — this is an action plan.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you to focus on “self-care” or to go get a massage and relax. No, that is not the right answer, because those are just distractions and excuses for not writing.
Your first course of action is to — write.
Doesn’t matter what you write.
No, sit you butt in the chair and hammer something out. Even if it’s the words “carrots and peas” over and over. Just write something.
While you’re in that writing space — start copying.
Copy. Copy. Copy.
Find an article, passage, poem, song, advertisement, chapter — doesn’t matter what. Get something you find interesting, then copy it out. Mindlessly, but with intent. Write it out.
Then go exploring.
Find a topic you think is fun.
Write, whatever you want, about it. Get some words out, in whatever manner. Spend time with it, and get ink to page. In whatever manner or style you want. Just write about your interest with no intention behind it.
Then return to your original piece.
Go back to where you got “stuck”.
Starting writing from the point you got jammed up. Write, whatever it is, with the acceptance of throwing it away. Treat it like a piece of trash that you’re okay with tossing. If it turns out to be no good, then be okay with starting over from nothing. It’s okay to take two steps back to take one forward.
Once you’ve done this, you’ve made it through.
You broke the barrier and are writing again.
